Green Flag

Kilgarvan Central School is working towards its 4th Green Flag. The theme this year is “Travel” and we have had regular visits from our Green Schools co-ordinator, Fiona Barry, who has been very helpful and supportive. The Kilgarvan Central School Green Schools committee members are:
Chairperson – Conor Twomey, Secretary – Eileen O’ Riordan
Members – Tomás Creedon, Mary Ellen McCarthy, Eoin O’ Shea, Corey Murphy, Chloe O’ Leary, Conaill O’ Sullivan, Jimmy Kelleher, Orla O’ Brien and our two new members, Cathal Kelleher and Laura Scanlon.

We wrote to Michael Healy-Rae on September 30th to enquire if on health and safety grounds, we could have flashing amber lights on both approaches to the school. Michael replied that he would get Johnny Healy-Rae to raise it at an area meeting by means of a notice of motion. We have mapped where each child lives in relation to the school and are at present collating this information.

On the 14th October, pupils from 1st and 2nd, along with the Green Schools committee, did a survey of traffic passing through the village. We will make the results available to all the classes. The Green Schools committee is also conducting a survey of how all the children travel to and from school. They are hoping to encourage more children to walk, carpool or park ‘n’ stride. We will let you know how we get on. We are also taking part in the RSA campaign to encourage the children to always wear their seat belts and to make sure all passengers in the vehicle wear theirs. The first and second class children are Seat Belt Sheriffs and make sure all children travelling to school by bus wear their seatbelts. They also encourage children to wear their high visibility vests when walking or cycling on the road.
